The poor performance of Harmanpreet Kaur in white-ball cricket presents difficulties for the Indian women’s team

The poor play of the Indian top-order hitters, particularly that of captain Harmanpreet Kaur, has been one of the most noticeable problems that has emerged throughout the Twenty20 International series between Australia Women and India Women.

Due to his dismal performance in the previous few T20Is and ODIs, Harmanpreet is now a major problem for an already fragile top order. She has not scored more than ten runs in each of her past five T20 international games, and in her last eight T20Is, the Indian captain has averaged fewer than eighteen runs.

During the third Twenty20 International match against Australia, Harmanpreet came to the crease in a desperate attempt to provide stability to the Indian batting order after they had lost two wickets in short succession.

However, the captain’s terrible and depressing record continued when she was removed for only 3 runs off of 6 balls after playing herself into the stumps off a slower delivery from Annabel Sutherland, the Player of the Match, putting her team in danger.

Let’s look at the Indian captain’s previous five T20I scores for India to get some more background.

HARMANAPREET KAUR’S LAST 5 T20I SCORE

3 vs Australia at Navi Mumbai on January 9.

6 vs Australia at Navi Mumbai on January 7.

6 not out against England in Mumbai on December 10, 2023

9 vs England in Mumbai on December 9, 2023

26 vs. England at Mumbai on December 6, 2023

This further compounds the puzzle that coach Amol Mazumdar has been dealing with about his assessment of the ideal Indian white-ball cricket team.

But keep in mind that the whole top order is at fault, not just Harmanpreet. In their past two games, which Australia won, India’s top order has horribly failed to set up the middle order.

The inconsistent scoring bursts from both openers, the two times that the batting powerplay was underutilized, and the over-reliance on middle-order batsmen like Deepti Sharma and Richa Ghosh to guide India to safety have all combined to make this team a recipe for disaster.

And calamity struck when India lost the three-match series 2-1 against the dominant Australia after losing both games in a humiliating manner.

With this setback, they have now failed to overcome the Australians in India since their lone and only series victory over them occurred back in 2016.
