Sheetal Devi, an arm-less archer, receives thunderous applause during the National Sports Awards ceremony

<p>President Droupadi Murmu presented India’s top athletes with national sports awards on Tuesday. The event took place at Rashtrapati Bhawan and included a regal ceremony wherein para archer Sheetal Devi and cricketer Mohammed Shami were welcomed with thunderous ovation. The coveted Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna award went to shuttlers Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy for their outstanding 2023, which included winning the Indonesia Open Super 1000 title, the Asian Championships title, and their first Asian Games gold.</p>

<p>Due to their present participation in the Malaysia Open Super 1000, the pair did not attend the event.</p>
<p>Usually held on August 29 to honor hockey hero Major Dhyan Chand’s birth anniversary, the awards presentation was postponed because to the Hangzhou Asian Games, which took place last year from September 23 to October 8.</p>
<p>The Rashtrapati Bhawan was filled with joy as 26 sportsmen and para-athletes were selected for this year’s Arjuna Awards; Esha Singh, a teenage pistol prodigy, was the only one not there.</p>

<p>When para archer Sheetal Devi, who won three gold medals at the Para Asian Games in Hangzhou, approached to pick up her Arjuna, the Durbar Hall echoed with the applause of the dignitaries.</p>
<p>The 16-year-old suffers from a rare medical ailment called phocomelia, which leaves her the only worldwide para-archery champion without upper limbs. As the adolescent took in the ambience and grandeur of the chamber, the President held Sheetal’s prize and the scroll.</p>

<p>Currently recuperating from an ankle ailment, Shami was present to accept the honors, and the audience rightly recognized his accomplishments by bestowing upon him and his artwork the position of honor and a standing ovation.</p>
<p>In seven World Cup matches last year, the speed bowler claimed 24 wickets.</p>

<p>The elder sister of chess prodigy R. Praggnanandhaa, R. Vaishali, the recently minted Grandmaster, was also showered with praise.</p>

<p>Athlete Parul Chaudhary, boxer Mohammad Hussamuddin (who placed third in last year’s world championship), and wrestler Antim Panghal (a previous junior world champion and bronze medalist at the senior tournament) were among the other sports luminaries selected for the Arjuna award this year.</p>
<p>Praggnanandhaa’s chess tutor, RB Ramesh, is one of this year’s outstanding Dronacharya awards.</p>
<p>The Arjuna and Dronacharya awards include a financial prize of Rs 15 lakh, but the Khel Ratna has a cash prize of Rs 25 lakh.</p>
