Security Plans for the Paris Olympics Taken From a Train

Police sources claimed on Tuesday that a bag carrying a computer and two USB memory sticks with police security plans for the Olympic Games in Paris was taken on Monday night from a train at the city’s Gare du Nord station.

According to the police, who were corroborated by BFM television, the bag belonged to an engineer from Paris City Hall. He said that he had placed the bag in the baggage compartment above his seat.

He chose to switch trains since his first train was running late, and that’s when he learned about the theft. The engineer said that critical information, including the municipal police’s preparations for safeguarding the Olympics, was on his work computer and two USB sticks.

The regional transit police are looking into this. When AFP called Paris City Hall, a representative was unable to respond right away.

During the Games, 2,000 local police officers will be assigned, bringing the total number of security personnel scheduled to be on duty daily for the Olympics—which begin on July 26—to around 35,000.
