As the BCCI pays a belated tribute to the late Dattajirao Gaekwad, Sunil Gavaskar becomes enraged with Indian management

Rajkot: The Indian team management has come under fire from former captain Sunil Gavaskar for their failure to pay respects to the nation’s oldest Test player, Dattajirao Gaekwad, who died away at the age of 95 earlier this week. Notably, Anshuman Gaekwad, the former captain and coach of India, is the son of Dattajirao, who captained the team during the 1959 England tour and played in 11 Test matches for his country between 1952 and 1961.

Dattajirao was born on October 27, 1928, and he died on February 13. On February 15, India and England started their third Test match. The Indian players donned black armbands in remembrance of the former cricket star on Day 3, or Saturday, as part of the BCCI’s homage to him. This decision did not sit well with Gavaskar.

It’s better late than never, eh? “It’s better that they did it now rather than on Day 1,” Gavaskar said while making a commentary on television. “He led the Indian team in a series of five matches as captain. Pankaj Roy captained the fifth and final match, while he led four of the five.

The BCCI made a post on the Indian players donning black armbands just before to the commencement of play on Saturday, Day 3. The black arm bands worn by #TeamIndia are a tribute to the late Dattajirao Gaekwad, the nation’s oldest Test cricket player and former captain of India. BCCI wrote, “#INDvENG.”

In an away game in 1952, Dattajirao made his India debut against England, scoring 350 runs, including a fifty. at 1961, he played his last match for his country, Pakistan, at Chennai. Dattajirao represented Baroda in 110 domestic games, amassing 3139 runs with 14 hundreds between 1947 and 1961. Against Maharashtra in the 1959–60 season, he amassed his best first-class score of 249 not out. After former hitter Deepak Shodhan passed away in Ahmedabad in 2016 at the age of 87, Dattajirao became the oldest cricketer alive in India.
